Cutting denim for all my vertically challenged peeps.
Ever love a pair of denim so much, but they’re just too long for your vertically challenged stems? Girl, me too.
To avoid this, I typically try to stick with an ankle length style to allow for a proper fit of my shorter stature. This approach works perfectly 9 times out of 10; however, on occasion I’ll find a style that is only available in lengths made specifically for models. Rats! What’s a girl to do?!
Time to take action into your own hands and cut your sweet little pair of denim to a length that works for YOU. The best part?! This creates a more versatile denim option that’s unique to you and your closet. YASSSS! Ready? Here’s how I did it and how you can too!
Materials:
- CLEAN denim – you want your denim straight out of the wash!
- Sharp scissors
- Ruler
- Pencil or chalk
Step 1:
Visually assess the denim to ensure the front and back hems are at an even length. If these hem lengths are uneven after your wash, iron your denim before you begin. This is so important!
Step 2:
Play around with the length by cuffing one leg of your denim. Once you’ve achieved your new desired length, measure the cuff from hem to fold.
Step 3:
Repeat Step 2 on the other leg!
Step 4:
Once you’re sure you’ll love your new length, remove your denim {whether you slip on a new pair is your biz} and turn them inside out.
Step 5:
Re-measure your denim to meet the same measurements taken in Steps 2 and 3 and mark. To ensure you’re drawing an even line, pencil or chalk your first marking directly next to the outside seam of the pant leg. Add your second mark by repeating the same process next to the inside seam. Now you have two marks.
Step 6:
Connect the dots! {Err, lines.}
Step 7:
Cut you’re denim to length! Trace the penciled or chalked line you created in Step 6 with your sharp pair of scissors. THATS IT! You’re done with leg one.
Step 8:
Repeat Steps 5 through 7 on leg two.
Step 9:
The final step for your newly cut denim is creating that amazing raw hem style. To create a real good raw hem that’s fast and incredibly easy, simply place the freshly cut edges in between your fingers and rub the denim together. It creates a subtle raw edge that can only get better with further wear + wash.
That’s it! An incredibly easy way to cut your denim to length in under 10 minutes. I hope you enjoyed this quick tutorial and can’t wait to see how YOU cut your denim!

Love the idea! I have 3 pairs that I absolutely love but it is too long and I always have to cuff them. I tried buying cropped jeans but I always think it needed to be a inch or too long… 😂 Thanks for the tip. Definitely giving it a try 😊
So glad this helped you out, Cristiane!! 😘 I’m with you; it can be so frustrating to be in between lengths and choose to always cuff or get them hemmed to the proper length. Such a pain! Definitely give this look a try on one of your 3 pairs and let me know how it goes! Xoxo
Ooo!!! How do they look now after some washes and wears? I’d love to see what you pair them with for tops with the raw edge!
They’re looking so great! Not too hard of a raw hem, but fraying slightly. I’ll make sure to do an outfit with them soon!! Xoxo
