In most areas, April means it’s springtime.
Not in Minnesota. I regretfully report that we’ve have two snow storms in the past week, while maintaining frigid cold temperatures. Yep, you can say spring is a little late here in Minne and I’m sad about it. But what’s new? It’s sad to say, but April does not necessarily mean spring for us. Rather, April is a teaser month for Minnesota and typically means: “Maybe spring will stick by May…?” Real life.
With this confusing time of year, how can we still incorporate our key spring pieces into our wardrobe that we’re so eagerly looking to wear, yet balance the whole I need to dress appropriately for the colder weather-thing? Ladies, I got you. As someone that’s equally, if not more eager to bust out their spring essentials, I’ve developed a fool-proof way to style your look for spring when it’s still cold outside.
Choose color.
This may seem obvious, but incorporating more color into your semi-springtime looks is essential. In the wintertime, I typically gravitate towards wearing oodles of neutral tones as it reflects that I’m in mourning with the cold. Just kidding – I’m just a huge lover of wearing all things black and the wintertime is simply the one time of year where I can rock it all season long. Therefore, during these semi-spring months, I make sure to switch out one of my neutral-toned pieces with a spring-like color. Think pink, lavender {THE it color of the year, P.S.} yellow or a periwinkle blue. In this particular look I chose pink {duh, it’s so rosé} for my semi-springtime color of choice; yet as you’ll notice, I’m still incorporating that heavier velvet fabric on my handbag to reflect the outside temperatures. This look still screams spring, but it’s also completely cold weather appropriate.
Choose a lighter weight jacket.
Again, maybe this is obvious to you if your outside temperatures are warming up, but for anyone that lives in an area that’s still freezing in April, it’s essential to tuck away that faux fur this time of year. I know, this is a shocking statement for me to make, but any fur-type of material or wool based jacket is simply meant for winter – not semi-spring April. By incorporating a jacket that’s composed of a lighter fabric, such as this gorgeous leopard number, you’ve instantly turned your needed cold weather essential into a springtime must.
Choose an open-back shoe.
Think a classic neutral slingback heel as I’m wearing here, or any other type of slide or mule that maintains a closed toe {I’m loving these options here and here!} After all, it’s still far too cold to expose those tootsies in you live in the North. This choice of open-back shoe is equally as important as this next step…
Choose a warm weather denim style.
The best part about denim is that its always a good choice year-round. However, with so many different styles, washes and colors available to us, which is the best overall style for your semi-springtime look? Since there’s still snow on the ground here, I opted for black denim {which can be worn year-round, mind you} to balance out the colder temperatures with my semi-spring color choice of pink. BUT, the key here is the style of denim I’m wearing, paired with my selection of a open-back shoe. These are the two main ingredients in formulating a semi-springtime look that’s still cognizant of the colder temperatures, but reflects the spring season.
In this look, I chose a cropped flare style {refer back to this post here on how to style cropped flares in the wintertime} to pair with my neutral toned slingback heels. By choosing this cropped style and pairing it with a open-back shoe, I’m minding the colder temperatures with my choice of denim and shoe, yet still saying “I’m ready for you spring!”
How do you incorporate springtime in your wardrobe when it’s still chilly outside?
Xx, Amanda
I so remember what this was like! I’m from northern Ohio, and “spring” either doesn’t come at all or lasts for about a week in May! I love the idea of incorporating more color as the weather gets (or is supposed to get) warmer.
Isn’t it crazy, Amy?! A few years ago we still had 60 degrees weather in June!! It was awful. But that’s Minne for you! So glad you found this post helpful. Thanks for stopping by! Xx
These color palettes are perfect for the transition into Spring! Love the idea of the open-back heel. Thanks for sharing !
